Yes, the Healthy Indiana Plan covers breast pumps as part of its maternity and preventive care benefits. HIP is Indiana’s version of Medicaid expansion, and it includes breastfeeding support for eligible mothers.
HIP has a unique structure compared to traditional Medicaid. Members have POWER accounts (Personal Wellness and Responsibility) and make small monthly contributions to their health coverage. The program has two tiers:
HIP Plus: For members who make their monthly POWER account contributions on time. HIP Plus offers more comprehensive benefits, including dental, vision, and enhanced coverage options.
HIP Basic: For members who do not make their POWER account contributions. HIP Basic provides essential coverage with more limited benefits.
Breast pump coverage is generally available under both HIP Plus and HIP Basic, though the specific pumps covered may vary. Verify your HIP coverage through Pumps for Mom to see your exact options.
The Healthy Indiana Plan is administered by four managed care organizations (MCOs). Your breast pump benefit comes through whichever MCO manages your HIP plan:
Anthem (HIP): Anthem administers a significant portion of HIP enrollment. Anthem follows HIP benefit guidelines for breast pump coverage.
MDwise: A nonprofit Indiana-based MCO that serves HIP members. MDwise processes breast pump orders according to HIP rules.
CareSource Indiana: CareSource operates in Indiana as one of the HIP MCOs, bringing its managed care expertise from Ohio and other states.
Managed Health Services (MHS): MHS is part of Centene Corporation and serves HIP members in Indiana.
Pumps for Mom works with all four HIP MCOs and understands the documentation requirements and coverage specifics for each.
Takes less than 60 seconds. Most moms pay $0.
To receive a breast pump through the Healthy Indiana Plan, you need:
Active HIP enrollment. Your HIP coverage must be current. If you are pregnant and not yet enrolled, you may qualify for HIP based on pregnancy — Indiana provides presumptive eligibility for pregnant women.
Pregnancy or postpartum status. You should be currently pregnant or within the postpartum coverage period.
POWER account status. Whether you have HIP Plus (contributions current) or HIP Basic (contributions not current) may affect your coverage options. Both tiers generally cover breast pumps, but HIP Plus may offer broader options.
Prescription. A doctor’s prescription is typically required. Your prenatal care provider can write this for you.
Provide your Healthy Indiana Plan member ID and MCO name (Anthem, MDwise, CareSource, or MHS) on Pumps for Mom.
We check your HIP maternity benefits and confirm which breast pumps are covered at no cost through your MCO.
Choose from the pumps your HIP plan covers. Pumps for Mom files the claim with your MCO and handles all paperwork.
Your breast pump ships free to your Indiana address.

What is the difference between HIP Plus and HIP Basic for breast pumps?
Both HIP Plus and HIP Basic generally cover breast pumps as part of maternity benefits. HIP Plus, available to members who make their monthly POWER account contributions, may offer broader coverage options. Verify your specific tier and coverage through Pumps for Mom.
What is a POWER account and does it affect my breast pump benefit?
POWER accounts are a unique feature of the Healthy Indiana Plan where members make small monthly contributions toward their health coverage. Keeping your POWER account current qualifies you for HIP Plus benefits. Breast pumps are generally covered under both tiers, but verifying your specific coverage is recommended.
Which HIP MCO do I have?
Your HIP MCO is listed on your insurance card. It will be Anthem, MDwise, CareSource, or Managed Health Services (MHS). You can also call the HIP helpline to confirm your MCO.
Can I get a breast pump through HIP if I am newly pregnant?
If you are newly pregnant and not yet enrolled in HIP, you may qualify for Indiana Medicaid or HIP based on pregnancy. Indiana offers presumptive eligibility for pregnant women, which provides immediate temporary coverage while your full application is processed.
