To qualify for a breast pump through TennCare, you generally need to meet these requirements:
Active TennCare enrollment: You must be currently enrolled in TennCare. Tennessee has specific eligibility categories for pregnant women, and you may qualify for TennCare based on pregnancy even if you did not previously qualify.
Pregnancy or postpartum status: TennCare breast pump coverage is available during pregnancy (typically third trimester) and during the postpartum period.
Prescription: A prescription or doctor’s order from your prenatal care provider is typically required. Your OB-GYN, midwife, or clinic can provide this.
Note that TennCare has a unique structure compared to most state Medicaid programs. It was one of the first to move all Medicaid beneficiaries into managed care, so all TennCare members receive their benefits through an MCO rather than traditional fee-for-service Medicaid.
